Cockerel

An unusual Netsuke, depicting a mature cockerel perched on a mortar.

Far more familiar and easier to determine the message of is the Cockerel on a drum, symbolic of peace. Our example swaps the drum for an old disused mortar. Later, probably around the Meiji period the Netsuke has been adorned with vines, stalks in pewter and leaves in mother of pearl, coral and horn. Eyes are inlaid in a red horn.

Signed: Togetsu ?. Edo. First half of the 19th Century.

5.5cm High.
