Neil Holton Japanese Art

A Snake, carved in an unusual coil formation is readying for the strike.

The style is akin to other snakes found with Tametaka signatures. One particularly attractive feature is the contrast between the tough scales and the softness of the underbelly.

Though our piece does not display a signature, there is enough similarity to suggest that the piece was made in Tametaka's lifetime and by at least a gifted member of his studio.

Nagoya. Last quarter of the 18th Century - First quarter of the 19th Century.
