New Year

A three case elephant ivory Inro. Carved in shallow shishiabori with a pair New Year dancers.

One in the background tapping a drum, the foreground dancer holding a fan partially covering his face. The details are very fine, facial features particularly expressive and the clothes of one performer delicately etched with a crane.

The reverse carved in the same technique but with a pair of potted plants in bloom, one a ‘Fukujuso’ a plant with a connection to the new year and conveying a long prosperous life.

Signed: Ono Ryomin. Tokyo. Last half of the 19th Century.
