Oni & Lotus

A large ivory study of an Oni laying across a Lotus leaf.

Though in its day it was a fine Netsuke, it has been heavily eroded through ownership. This occurs to a number of old Netsuke, it even has its own term, ‘ghosted’. This is where heavy use, or heavy handling takes its toll on the details. However, what often is left behind is glorious patination.

This old ivory Kyoto Netsuke bearing just about as good a colour and consistency as you would ever find.

Anonymous. Kyoto. Circle of Tomotada. Middle of the 18th Century, perhaps earlier.

6.2 cm High
