Neil Holton Japanese Art

An ivory model of a Shishi surmounted on an oval base.

The body of the beast is covered in hair broken only by a few bulbous mounds denoting muscles.

Typical for the artist, the head is made up of conchshell-like eye brows, fleur-de-lis like nose and stepped eye balls which terminate in tiny globes of a jet black material, probably umimatsu.

The piece is stained a pleasing colour. The inking is brilliant black which highlights the recessed areas. The underside is a seal carved in positive.

Shishi. Attributed to Rensai. Asakusa. Last quarter of the 19th Century.
