Neil Holton Japanese Art

Mokugyo

A rare and large Elephant Ivory Mokugyo. Formed with the heads of two confronting birds, their meeting beaks contain a pearl.

The rounded body etched in a stylised manner, presumably depicting an opening flower. The reverse excavated and carved with a lotus stalk and a leaf. The profile from the side is that of a Kabuto (Helmet) and when viewed from the front the etched opening flower becomes the Maedate (crest) decoration. An extremely clever Netsuke, linking Buddhism and the Warrior class.

Anonymous. Probably Asakusa. Mid 19th Century.
